Thirteen Heavens

The thirteen heavens (in Nahuatl Ilhuicatl Iohtlatoquiliz ) is “the journey through the paths of heaven”, in Aztec mythology is concretized in the worldview of Nahua beliefs concerning space and time in a structured universe through the division that determines living forces after the original couple Omecíhuatl and Ometecuhtli , who had 4 male children, the Tezcatlipocas ( Xipetótec , Tezcatlipoca , Quetzalcóatl and Huitzilopochtli), of which they inherited the art of creating their parents from the substance, so after 600 years of inactivity, Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl organized the vertical and horizontal universe, where the horizontal universe was comprised of cardinal points or directions hemispheric, while the vertical universe comprised two parts, the upper and the lower, where the upper part would be supported by 4 gigantic trees from each corner of the Tlalocán , the central part of the universe, preventing the supermundo (upper) and the underworld (lower) join the Tlaltícpac (the earth), a land formed from the body of the Cipactli, a solid and lively land that generates sustenance for man, our mother nature, because from it the surface was created, Tlaltícpac, from its hair trees, flowers and plants emerged, from its skin plains, plains and river sediments arose, from its eyes, wells, caves and fountains arose, from its mouth rivers, lakes and springs arose, from its nose valleys, mountain ranges and plateaus arose, and from its shoulders saws, volcanoes and mountains arose. By organizing the universe horizontally and vertically, the Tezcatlipocas forged the couples of gods who would control the waters ( Tláloc and Chalchiuhtlicue ), the earth ( Tlaltecuhtli and Tlalcíhuatl ), fire ( Xiuhtecuhtli ) and Xantico.

The superworld (thirteen heavens) and the underworld (nine regions) represent the vertical universe, whose upper and lower forces converge from the earth, influencing it, likewise, daily celestial bodies descend to the underworld and ascend from it, entwined by the horizontal universe, hemispheric directions or cardinal points that are governed by the Creator Gods. To the North ( Mictlampa ), Tezcatlipoca, to the West / West ( Cihuatlampa ), Quetzalcóatl, to the East / East ( Tlahuiztlampa ), Xipetótec, and to the South ( Huitztlampa), Huitzilopochtli, whose forces emanating from the hemispheric directions converge and are supported by a central axis, the Calpulli, which was guarded by Xiuhtecuhtli, god of fire, lord of time.
